Explicit memory4/17/2023 ![]() Memory researcher Henry Roediger (2013) sums it up: “Hundreds of studies have shown that distributed practice leads to more durable learning.” Distributing your learning over several months, rather than over a shorter term, can help you retain information for a lifetime. The spacing effect is one of psychology’s most reliable findings, and it extends to motor skills and online game performance (Stafford & Dewar, 2014). If you need to remember something 6 months from now, practice it again a month from now (Cepeda et al., 2008). How much later? If you need to remember something 10 days from now, practice it again tomorrow. Explicit memory is also called declarative memory because it involves information that you can consciously recall, state, and describe. ![]() You’ll retain material better if, rather than cramming, you space your study, with reviewing time later. But to paraphrase pioneering memory researcher Hermann Ebbinghaus (185 0– 1909), those who learn quickly also forget quickly. Massed practice (cramming) can produce speedy shor t- term learning and feelings of confidence. Psychologists call this the spacing effect, and more than 300 experiments have confirmed that distributed practice produces better lon g- term recall (Cepeda et al., 2006). Explicit memory is concerned with events or concepts and includes memory for abstract representations such as facts, rules, concepts and events and as such deals with information that can be declared, or expressed, usually in words. Our brain creates our memory by processing the neural information, and integrating those facts, data, and events, so that they can be later retrieved. ![]() It consists of facts and events that can be consciously recalled or declared. We retain information better when our encoding is spread over time. Explicit memory, also known as declarative memory, is the capability with which we consciously recall learned information. Declarative (explicit) memory is a part of long-term memory.
